Abstract

Digital Orthodontics: a Vanity Fair?

In this era of digital orthodontics and social medias,we see a number of publications that promote specific tools and techniques . Most of these technologies, using digital workflows, focus more on the appliances than on the doctor skills, relegating the diagnosis, the treatment goals and the biomechanics to the background. The social medias are also used by the companies to directly reach the final consumer, who is either the patient or the doctor, to market their product without any or a few scientific support creating a FOMO feeling. The aim of my lecture is to evaluate the validity of some of these protocols and to show if they rely on a sound scientific evidence or, if it’s just an agressive marketing based vanity fair pushed by the orthodontic industry! I will explain the reality about the clear aligner therapy, what the studies tell us about the distalization and the miniscrews assisted rapid palatal expansion (MARPE),and finally the logical approach of the gummy smile treatment based on the etiologies ,the function and the esthetics of the smile.
